“When My Peonies Bloom” acrylic on panel, 48″ x 36″

While it’s not always been the case, I am an abstract artist. I first experienced the thrill of creation in my formative years when I took a pottery course. This feeling has stayed in my mind all these years.

Today, I am a painter. It’s as simple as that. It’s the challenge of a blank canvases and creating something tangible that is born out of an emotional reaction that draws me to the studio. I use color to express an emotional response from a memory or experience.

When I’m not in the studio, I like to regularly spend time on a trail or casting a line in a river. In the Pacific Northwest I live, these are easily available.

I am moved by the colors of the season, the rocky outcroppings on the river, or the shadowy patterns that appear on a dusty path. My time outdoors encourages me to explore how the metaphysical and physical worlds interact and influence each other. The rise and fall of an image, as I move in and out while painting is a metaphor for my ever-changing landscape.

I like the seductive qualities that oil paint adds to wax mediums when expressing ideas. Acrylic paints have an immediate effect that I like. Mixing a limited palette of colors to create a hue I’ve never seen before excites me greatly.

It’s not unusual for me to add dirt and dried organic materials to the paint. I can also use a stone or a stick from the trail as a mark on a panel of wood or paper. I can expand an idea by working on multiple surfaces simultaneously. This often leads to a series.

I’m finding that as I get older my focus has become simpler and more direct. I enjoy learning new ways to express myself that I can’t otherwise articulate.

The wildness of nature has profound healing properties. I would like to encourage people to follow their creative dream and explore their curiosity wherever their journey may take them.
